What Happens in Practice?

Companies will choose the type of assurance that is most appropriate for their stage of reporting.  Here are four assurance statements illustrating Limited and Reasonable assurance. Both General and Specific assurance examples are provided for each type of engagement. One last example provides a statement in which Limited assurance was used for some aspects and Reasonable assurance was used for others.

Limited Assurance ->General

Limited Assurance -> Specific

Reasonable Assurance -> General

Centrica is an integrated energy company with operations mainly in the UK, where it is headquartered, and North America. The company sources, generates, processes, trades and stores energy. Reasonable Assurance -> Specific

Exxon Mobil is headquartered in the United States with energy operations in many countries of the world. Exxon Mobil’s Reasonable Assurance Statement is on the specific processes for reporting of safety, health and environmental indicators and selected additional indicators.
