SMART Indicators

What characteristics should indicators have?

Whether indicators are selected by the specific organization or recommended by a reporting standard, the indicator selection process consists of determining those indicators that best fit a set of characteristics. Before a specific organization chooses its indicators for reporting, it should evaluate them against a set of criteria that is customized to its needs. One set suggests that indicators should be SMART.

SMART is an acronym used to remember the following characteristics:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Timely

Each of these characteristics will be discussed more thoroughly.
