Sustainability Performance

“There’s only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self. So you have to begin there, not outside, not on other people. That comes afterward, when you’ve worked on your own corner.”

– Aldous Huxley

Sustainability performance is the prelude to sustainability reporting. An organization engages in some activities and then reports on those activities.

The concept of “sustainability” is fairly new. It has been used in many different contexts; therefore, an organization should define its approach to sustainability in its report. The reader might have a different sustainability definition or model and different expectations in mind than the organization, leading to confusion.

This section of the module discusses the dimensions normally included in a sustainability definition. It then explains how personal or organizational values can influence the interpretation and implementation of the organization’s activities in each of those dimensions.
