Benchmarks

Knowing how other organizations have performed helps a reader to assess performance. Benchmarks can be provided for any of the following:

  • organizations with similar operations in the industry;
  • organizations within the same geographic location, regardless of type of operations, if the interest is of a regional nature;
  • organizations of a similar size, regardless of location, if the interest is of a global nature;
  • organization’s performance for one year compared to previous years; or
  • another context that helps readers to evaluate an organization’s performance.

This comparability process helps to illustrate the magnitude of a company’s operations, especially in areas of scarce resources, as well as how it defines sustainability compared to other entities.
